Who Should Not Be Prescribed Medical Marijuana?

It is important to consider that cannabis (marijuana) should not be authorized in those who:

  • Are under the age of 25
  • Have a personal history or strong family history of psychosis
  • Have a current or past cannabis use disorder
  • Have an active substance use disorder
  • Have cardiovascular disease (angina, peripheral vascular disease, cerebrovascular disease, arrhythmias)
  • Have respiratory disease
  • Are pregnant, planning to become pregnant, or breastfeeding

Dried cannabis should be authorized with caution in those patients who:

  • Have a concurrent active mood or anxiety disorder
  • Smoke tobacco
  • Have an occupational hazard
